TENNIS TOURNAMENT
Grand Canyon Nationals
Oliver Claims the Grand Canyon Nationals

"It was a Blast!" said Phil Oliver, former Dixie High's State tennis champion said after being victorious over Richard Wigley 3-2, 3-0 in the finals of the Grand Canyon Nationals on Saturday. At 2 all in the first set Wigley was serving for the set. During a critical point Wigley was able to retrieve a drop shot and lob it over Phil's head but he ran it down and hit a between the legs circus television shot that Andre Agassi would have been proud of which forced Wigley into a miss at the net on a difficult backhand volley. Phil came through the draw on Saturday with wins over, Kyle Kezos, 3-1, 3-0, Russ Christensen, 3-0, 3-0, Marc Manuele 3-0, 3-2 and Jeremy Atkin 3-0, 3-0. The hardest fought matches were played on the bottom half of the draw between Art Frak defeating Steve Gulber 2-3, 3-0, 3-2 and Wigley's come from behind win over Don Poulter in the Semifinals 2-3, 3-2, 3-1.

The event was sponsored by Jimmy Johns who provided sandwiches to all the participants and the St. George Tennis Academy who provide prizes for the winners. Please contact Dave Smith at 680-3250 for more information or go to http://www.teachingtennis.com for the scores and schedules.
