TENNIS TOURNAMENT
Red Cliffs Challenge
Burkley, Krupicka win Red Cliffs Tennis Challenge

Chris Burkley and Dan Krupicka, both from Kayenta served notice on defending doubles champs Charley Harward and Gary Rink of St. George in Red Cliffs Doubles Championships. Burkley and Krupicka won the final 3-1, 3-2 in a well-played match.

The tournament, part of the year-round “Super Saturday” series of weekly events was sponsored by Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches and the St. George Tennis Academy. The tournaments are hosted by the City of St. George Leisure Services, and directed by SGTA owner Dave Smith, has now attracted over 240 different players in the past year.

36 participants played on Saturday, with Burkley and Krupicka defeating Getz and Nelson 3-2, 3-2 first round, Haynes and Peterson 3-0, 3-0 second round, and Mark Manuele and Greg Soderquist 3-2, 3-2 in the semi finals.

Harward and Rink knocked off Allie Bergen and Callie John 3-0, 3-0 in round one, Marlene Curtis and Shanna Simmons 3-0, 3-0 in the second, and Ryan Lakey and Dow Christiansen 2-3, 3-2, 3-2 in a hard fought semi final.

A.J. Bartlett and Jeremy Atkin defeated Rick Hubbard and Phil Schuler 3-0, 3-0 in the finals of the main consolation round. Allie Bergen and Callie John took 1st place in the consolation back draw, defeating Tori Bergen and Emily Kuntzler 3-1, 3-1 and Rickie Radhe and Sam Moyle 3-2 Ret. in the final.

The next event, the White Cloud Championships will be held February 1st. All events are open to the public with all ages and abilities encouraged. Cost is $5 per player with all participants receiving sandwiches provided by Jimmy Johns. New balls are provided as well as prizes for multiple division winners.
