TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Three time champ, Kevin Orton falls to Donny Bishop in Pine Mountain Championships 3-2, 3-0.

Donny Bishop of Toquerville faced the winner of the last three tournaments, Kevin Orton of Cedar City, in his first singles championship and dominated with a 3-2, 3-0 victory.  Bishop used an attacking chip and charge game along with 120mph plus serves to win the Pine Mountain Championships. In the semifinals Donny knocked out Jeremy Atkin 3-2, 3-1 and in the quarterfinals after losing a set to Russ Christensen stormed back with a 1-3, 3-1, 3-0 winning effort.

"This format forces you to adjust to new players and really tests your ability to stay focus and play aggressively.” Donny said. "The tennis here is really good and the last three matches I played were tough and a lot of fun.”

"We had 43 players in the draw. This was by far our biggest and best tournament in both number of players and quality.” Tournament Wayne Bullock said. “With the high school season starting we are seeing the kids working hard to get better by playing experienced adults“.

The fast format program is unique to Southern Utah and the organizers believe it generates a tournament tough player faster than any other tennis program in the Country. High School standouts and veterans of Super Saturday Tennis, Jeremy Atkin, Mike Schijf, Isaac Nelson, Matt Glendenning, Sam Moyle, Sam & Russ Christensen  and proving the point by developing into great players. New players soon to be recognized include, Dave Christensen, Brock Aldred, Carlos Morgan, Gavin & Ricky Rahde and many more.

Clint Aldred was able to win the consolations over Steven Archibald 3-0, 3-1. Aldred beat Burke Van Norman and Steve Gubler while Archibald got to the consolation finals by getting by Heath Carr 3-0, 1-3, 3-0; 

On Saturday March 12^th, the Kayenta Doubles Challenge will start at 10:30AM at Tonaquint. All players are invited with or without a partner.
