ST. GEORGE: Sam Moyle of Hurricane won his first Super Saturday singles tennis tournament in one of the largest and most competitive fields ever. Moyle, a senior and Hurricane high school’s top tennis player, came from behind to beat Dixie high’s top player Matt Glendenning 2-3, 3-1, 3-1. Both players had to beat extremely talented opponents in getting to the finals. Moyle defeated Jessica Tolman, Chad Anderson Mike Ranken and Mark Schoutens to reach the final. Glendenning, who had perhaps the toughest draw, played three consecutive matches against three previous Super Saturday champions; Rich Wigley, Mike Schijf, and Jeremy Atkin in addition to an opening round match win against Carlos Hansen.

Mark Manuele defeated another Dixie tennis player, Turner Pope, in the finals of the Tier II bracket while Randy Skalla of Colorado defeated Richard Wigley of Ivins in the Tier III bracket. All three tiers featured quality and exciting tennis to watch.

“Moyle is playing with confidence and maturity,” said Dave Smith, tournament director and owner of the St. George Tennis Academy, which Moyle is a long-time member of. “Matt Glendenning also played an exceptional tournament showing how much he has improved,” Smith added. In fact, most of the adults who frequent St. George Tennis Academy’s tournament have commented on the huge number of improved juniors that now play in St. George.

“We have, by far, the largest number of highly-ranked juniors in the state,” Richard Wigley said identifying more than 25 local junior players who played in the 43-player draw.

Next week the Academy will host the Purple Sage Doubles Tournament. All players are welcome. Cost is $5 per player with all players treated to sandwiches provided by Jimmy Johns of St. George.
