ST. GEORGE: Wade Judy of Cedar City won the Desert Nationals 3-1, 3-1 over Jeremy Atkin. The tournament was played at St. George’s Tonaquint Tennis Park. Wade played flawlessly hardly missing a shot in taking out three former champions to take the title, Dan Krupicka in the quarters 3-0, 3-1, then 2005 points leader, Kevin Orton in the Semis 3-1, 3-1 and in the finals he continued on form winning 3-1, 3-1 versus the hard hitting and super fast Jeremy Atkin turning defense to offense using his accurate one handed slice and closing out points at the net. Atkin had an excellent run to the finals taking out Richard Wigley in the Semis 3-1, 3-1 and Mark Schoutens 3-0, 3-1 in the quarters.

"Wade's a tough player! He just doesn't miss and he is always attacking any short ball," Jeremy said. "I was serving great all day and huge in the first set but he just kept blocking it back and coming in forcing me to go for too much and miss hit."

Jeremy and Wade also play as teammates for the Dixie Super Stars, a 4.5 USTA league which will be heading to Salt Lake City in July to compete against the best players in the State.

Steve Gubler won the Tier II Consolation over J.J. Crofts 3-1, 3-0 and Matt Shaerrer won the Tier III event. This Saturday the Tonaquint Grand Slam Championships will mark the end of the Desert Spring Season. Play is open to all doubles players of all ages. Cost is $5 per player.
