ST. GEORGE: Sam Moyle won in a decisive fashion serving aces on the last
three points to win the Red Desert Open over Kevin Orton 3-2, 3-0. Orton
remains in the 2005 Southern Utah Tennis Points Leader with 4,185 over
Moyle’s 3,320 with Jeremy Atkin who did not play this event with 3,275.
“My serve was dominating in the final against Kevin.” Sam said. “I really felt it come together and it was exciting to be hitting the ball so clean and fast.”
In the semifinals Sam had to struggle through a “weird match” and come back after losing the first set to end Mike Schijf 12 match win streak 1-3, 3-1, 3-0.
The consolations saw a new rising champion with Ricky Rahde fresh off his doubles victory last week followed it up with an impressive run with victories over J.J. Crofts, 3-2, 3-1 Hunter Housley, 3-2, 3-1 and Chris Ashworth in the consolation finals 3-1, 3-1. His only loss came to the #4 seed Mark Schoutens in the quarterfinals of the main draw 3-2, 3-1.
“I was getting hungry in the final and wanted to get done as quickly as I could.” Ricky said. “I served great in this tournament. I think I had 15 aces in my matches.”
