ST. GEORGE: Mike Schijf served an ace on match point to win the Summer Solstice Open 3-1, 2-3, 3-2 over Cedar’s Kevin Orton. On his victory march Mike defeated four previous Super Saturday Champions, taking out Dylan Christensen 3-0, 3-0 it the first round then Chris Burkley 1-3, 3-0, 3-0 in the quarters and then Jason Whittington 3-1, 2-3, 3-2 in the semifinals.
“On match point I just went for it and hit an ace up the T. This is a great win for me and I needed it.” Mike said. I have been having trouble closing out matches and I can’t believe I didn’t win it in the second set but I feel good about how I kept my composure and won my matches today.”
The Super Saturday tournament attracted a full draw of 16 players and they competed in 30 matches. Kevin Orton’s path to the finals consisted of straight sets wins over Matt Glendenning 3-1, 3-0 in the Semis, Richard Wigley 3-2, 3-1 in the Quarters and Gavin Rahde 3-0, 3-2 in the First Round.
The Consolation bracket could have been a final as well as Chris Burkley won a lengthy match over Mark Schoutens 3-1, 3-2. The first game went back and forth 12 times before Burkley was able to win it and go on to the victory. Burkley’s toughest opponent in the consolation draw was the vastly improved Gavin Rahde. Burkley won the three setter 3-2, 2-3, 3-1 in one of the best matches of the day.
