Wigley wins Red Feather Championships tennis tournament

ST. GEORGE -- Richard Wigley came back from down a match point to defeat Jeremy Atkin in the finals of the Red Feather Championships on Saturday. The event was part of the Super Saturday series, and Wigley was excited about defeating Atkin, who has been the hottest player of the summer.

"This is my first win against 'J-Dog' since May and also a tournament win makes it even better." Wigley said. "I played with more discipline hitting backhand slices whenever I could to Jeremy's forehand. He got impatient in the last set and I got real lucky."

A full draw of 32 played 50 matches. Bruce Haines, who will be competing in the 60's of the Senior Games, had a great run knocking off Jeff Simmons 3-2, 2-3, 3-2 before losing to Atkin.

In the consolations Mike Schijf won with a tough victory over Sam Moyle 2-3, 3-2, 3-2. This coming Saturday will be the Kayenta Cup Doubles Challenge. The event is open to all players and will begin at 10:30 a.m. Contact Dave Smith at 680-3250 or go to www.teachingtennis.com for information.
