CHALLENGE MATCHES
Challenges matches combined with tournament play are extremely important to establish ladders and offer incentives for players to get better. In the system we have players who are seeking challenges. The scores will be reported and will be added to your point scores during the quarterly championship points race.

    Fall 2002
    The Tennis Ladder is in full swing with a number of events played. Chris Burkley successfully defeated his first challenger by getting by Richard Wigley 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a two hour match played in Kayenta. The following represents matches that were listed as official challenges in order of play over the first week of ladder competition; Victor Strange def Richard Wigley 3-2, 3-2, Dan Krupicka def. Richard Wigley 6-2, 6-1; Jeremy Atkin def Dan Krupicka 6-3, 6-3, A.J. Bartlett def Richard Wigley 3-2, 3-1; Richard Wigley def. Victor Strange 2-3, 3-0, 3-0.

Challenge Rules

 

Challenges are open to all players. Points earned in the Challenge Matches will be added to Championship Totals.

Players can compete in as many challenges as they wish. Challenge matches can be played anytime against any
player except.
1. During a organized tournament scheduled time.
2. Against any player more than 5 times during a Circuit.
3. Challenge matches may not be played between two players more than twice in succession.

Challenge Rules of Conduct
A Challenged player must respond to the challenge within 10 days. A player can refuse because of:
1. Injury or Illness
2. Challenge matches played or scheduled
3. Distance or unavailability.
4. Player Option (Limit of 5 refusals per 25 challenges)
Failure to play the match or refuse unless mutually agreed to cancel will result in a default and 10 point deduction. The Challenger will receive the winner points as compensation for the default.

Challenge Types:
Singles / Doubles Challenges Matches may be played as follows.
FAST FORMAT 3 of 5 games 2 of 3 sets regular scoring no t/b.
Regular Scoring First to Six or 8 Games (1) Set or Pro Set.
Regular Scoring first to six game sets 2 of 3 Sets with tiebreakers.
Regular Scoring six game sets 3 of 5 Sets with 7 point tiebreakers.
The Winner or Loser may report the score to a coach of SGTA or TTC for points to be added. All challenge matches requested, played and or canceled are to be recorded. Failure to report, making fictitious scores or changing actual scores will result loss of points.

Ranking Points:
may be awarded to a player who wins versus a higher ranked opponent. (5) points are awarded for defeating a player ranked 10 to 100 places ahead. (10) points are awarded for an unranked player defeating a player ranked in the top 10.

Additional rules and procedures:
In case of a default during play the score will be added out to equal a winning score. In case of a weather disruption play will resume when appropriate. No player will be required to play more than 2 challenges per week.
